The Haul

Visiting the new used bookstore, I’m surprised

to find The Outlaw Bible of American Poetry

prominently displayed for only six bucks.

Then find two baseball novels: The Natural

and Summerland, each two bucks.

After asking where the poetry section is

I glance through the two shelves

And then look up and see my book

on top of the shelf. I pick it up.

Their used price is six bucks. I open it;

the only inscription is a cursive, “read 8/11/13.”

No signature, no dog-eared pages, or other writing.

So I buy it and think, “Hey I may not be in the Outlaw Bible

But they thought my book was worth just as much.”
